The king then asked his second daughter to speak about her thoughts. Equally hypocritical, the words of Regan were just as sweet as her elder sister's. She said that her sister's words could not show all her love for her father. No joy in the world could interest her, and she felt happy only when she served her father the king. Believing her words, Lear granted another one third of his land to his second daughter.
Now the king turned to his youngest daughter Cordelia, whom he called his joy, and he loved her more than the other two daughters. Cordelia hated her two sisters hypocritical display of love for her father. Though she loved her father truly and dearly, Cordelia said with plain words: "I love Your Majesty according to my bond, no more no less." Surprised by the words of his favorite daughter, King Lear thought Cordelia was ungrateful. The king asked Cordelia to rephrase her speech for the benefit of her own future.
Being an honest child, Cordelia did not want to entertain her father with hypocritical words. She explained to her father: "My Lord, you have begotten me, bred me, loved me. I return those duties back as are right fit, obey you, love you, and highly honor you."
